Melbourne Polytechnic’s Certificate IV in Auslan PSP40818 will provide you with advanced Auslan skills. Employment opportunities in Auslan interpretation and accessibility requirements are increasingly necessary across a broad range of industries, from the disability sector to entertainment. Melbourne Polytechnic’s Certificate IV in Auslan continues the only accredited pathway to learn Auslan in Victoria. This course builds on the Certificate III in Auslan PSP30218. You will develop the language skills to discuss and exchange information about complex topics.
Communicate effectively with the Deaf community
Melbourne Polytechnic’s Certificate IV in Auslan PSP40818 is an advanced language course. You will gain intermediate to advanced Auslan skills, and continue to explore the linguistic differences between Auslan and English. You will also have the opportunity to study elective topics, including Communicating with DeafBlind people. Melbourne Polytechnic has a long history within the disability sector, and as Victoria’s sole provider of this accredited pathway to learning Auslan, you will have opportunities to participate in Deaf community-based activities and events with our industry partners.
Take specialist Auslan skills into the job market
This pre-vocational course can support employment outcomes within the Deaf community and wider disability sector, including positions as a research assistant, youth or disability worker, or counsellor. You might also find work in the community, education or performing arts industries.
Auslan is moving to the Collingwood Campus
We are excited to let you know that all on-campus face-to-face classes will be located at our Melbourne Polytechnic Collingwood Campus by July 2024. This is a dedicated, state-of-the-art Auslan space, based on DeafSpace principles pioneered by Gallaudet University in the USA. It provides a rich sensory experience around the unique needs of Deaf people and includes architectural design elements that optimise the teaching and learning of Auslan. Fees displayed are effective for new applications received on or after 1st of November. Tuition fees do not include textbooks, course materials or overseas student health insurance and visa fees.
After initial deposit, international students are able to pay tuition fees in installments, four times per year.

Concession fees are charged at 20 per cent of the standard fees for enrolments in Certificate I to IV courses. To be eligible students must meet Skills First eligibility criteria and present a valid:
- Commonwealth Health Care card, or
- Pensioner Concession card, or
- Any dependent spouse or dependent child of one of the above cardholders, or
- Veterans Gold card.
The following groups are eligible for concession fees from Certificate I to Advanced Diploma level:
- Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students
- Asylum Seekers and victims of human trafficking
Additional expenses
The Student Services and Amenities Fee is charged at forty cents (40 cents) per student contact hour and is capped over a twelve (12) month period, effective from the enrolment date, to:
- $250 for full fee-paying students; and
- $175 for concession-paying students studying Certificate I, II, III, or IV.
Amenities fees are used to improve non-academic services including libraries, counselling services, student support, and recreational activities.
Auslan courses at Melbourne Polytechnic
Requirements
- Successful completion of Certificate III in Auslan PSP30218 or equivalent.
- ACSF Working Level 4 for Reading and ACSF Working Level 3 for Numeracy.
- For new students and students who had a break in training, attendance at an Information Session is highly recommended. After the Information Session, applicants will be required to attend a group selection interview. You will be offered a place based on the outcome of this group selection interview.
