Advance your Auslan skills
Build on the Auslan skills your learned in the Certificate II in Auslan PSP20218 and prepare for advanced Auslan courses. With only 67% of Deaf people able to access an interpreter when they need one, Auslan skills are in demand.
Our Certificate III in Auslan PSP30218 continues the only accredited pathway to learn Auslan in Victoria. This course is a prerequisite to Auslan interpreter training, but is also appropriate for friends, colleagues and family members of Deaf and hard of hearing people who would like to increase their accessibility and communication abilities.
Learn to converse in personal and professional settings
Melbourne Polytechnic’s Certificate III in Auslan PSP30218 is a pre-vocational course aiming to further develop your Auslan skills. Completion of this qualification will allow you to converse in Auslan in personal and professional settings. You will understand and be able to use Deaf protocol and customs in your interactions. You will also develop an understanding of the linguistics of Auslan in contrast to English. Melbourne Polytechnic has a long history within the disability sector, and as Victoria’s sole provider of this accredited pathway to learning Auslan, you will have opportunities to participate in Deaf community-based activities and events with our industry partners.

When you graduate from this course, you could converse in routine Auslan in personal, learning, employment, social and community contexts. You could use your Auslan skills to improve job opportunities across administration, childcare, ICT services and occupational therapy work.
Auslan is moving to the Collingwood Campus
We are excited to let you know that all on-campus face-to-face classes will be located at our Melbourne Polytechnic Collingwood Campus by July 2024. This is a dedicated, state-of-the-art Auslan space, based on DeafSpace principles pioneered by Gallaudet University in the USA. It provides a rich sensory experience around the unique needs of Deaf people and includes architectural design elements that optimise the teaching and learning of Auslan. Study Pathways
You will enter this course after successfully completing the Certificate II in Auslan PSP20218.
Successful completion of this course will enable you to enrol in the Certificate IV in Auslan PSP40818, which will enable more fluid and challenging communication with Deaf people.

- Full time: Four days a week for 18 weeks. Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday. 9:30 a.m. to 2:45 p.m.
Online
- Part time evening: Two evenings a week, 42 weeks. Tuesday and Thursday. 6:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. plus online conversation class and six on-campus face-to-face Saturday workshops

Fees displayed are effective for new applications received on or after 1st of November. Tuition fees do not include textbooks, course materials or overseas student health insurance and visa fees.
After initial deposit, international students are able to pay tuition fees in installments, four times per year.

Concession fees are charged at 20 per cent of the standard fees for enrolments in Certificate I to IV courses. To be eligible students must meet Skills First eligibility criteria and present a valid:
- Commonwealth Health Care card, or
- Pensioner Concession card, or
- Any dependent spouse or dependent child of one of the above cardholders, or
- Veterans Gold card.
The following groups are eligible for concession fees from Certificate I to Advanced Diploma level:
- Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students
- Asylum Seekers and victims of human trafficking
Additional expenses
The Student Services and Amenities Fee is charged at forty cents (40 cents) per student contact hour and is capped over a twelve (12) month period, effective from the enrolment date, to:
- $250 for full fee-paying students; and
- $175 for concession-paying students studying Certificate I, II, III, or IV.
Amenities fees are used to improve non-academic services including libraries, counselling services, student support, and recreational activities.
Auslan courses at Melbourne Polytechnic
Requirements
- Successful completion of Certificate II in Auslan PSP20218 or equivalent.
- ACSF Working Level 4 for Reading and ACSF Working Level 2 for Numeracy.
- For new students and students who had a break in training, attendance at an Information Session is highly recommended. After the Information Session, applicants will be required to attend a group selection interview. You will be offered a place based on the outcome of this group selection interview.
